a suffix with the meanings "resembling, having the nature of," "made of," occurring in loanwords from Latin (cretaceous; herbaceous) and forming adjectives in English on the Latin model (ceraceous), esp. adjectival correspondents to taxonomic names ending in -acea and -aceae: rosaceous.
