Scargill

(1938– )
an English trade union leader and politician. In 1981 he became the President of the NUM and in 1984–5 he led the miners’ strike in protest against the Conservative government’s plans to close several mines. In 1996 he formed a new political party, the Socialist Labour Party, which he considered to be closer to the original principles of the Labour Party.
