Wildenstein, Daniel Leopold

▪ 2002

French-born art historian, art dealer, and thoroughbred race horse owner (b. Sept. 11, 1917, Verrières-le-Buisson, France—d. Oct. 23, 2001, Paris, France), was the head of Wildenstein & Co., a secretive and tightly controlled billion-dollar art dynasty that was founded in the 1870s by his grandfather and later moved to New York City by his father. The family company, which Daniel Wildenstein joined in New York in 1940, owned a vast collection of valuable art (including a large number of works by the French Impressionists), as well as art galleries in Japan and New York. Wildenstein, a respected art historian, compiled the catalogues raisonnés for Monet, Manet, and Gauguin. As the owner of a major horse-racing stable in France, Wildenstein was named Owner of the Year six times; his horses won the Prix l'Arc de Triomphe, France's most prestigious race, on four occasions.
