Thomas, James

▪ 1994

("SON"; "SONNY FORD"), U.S. blues musician (b. Oct. 14, 1926, Eden, Miss.—d. June 26, 1993, Greenville, Miss.), personified the classic Mississippi Delta blues tradition. Thomas was born on a farm and moved as a youth to Leland, Miss., where he laboured as a field hand, gravedigger, and factory worker. He taught himself to play the guitar by listening to the radio and played in local juke joints and barrelhouses until he made his first record in 1968. By the mid-1970s Thomas had built an international following and had taken his traditional guitar work and wry songs about hard times, women, and survival to music festivals and clubs across the U.S. and Europe. He also appeared on television and in films produced by the Center for Southern Folklore, notably the award-winning Delta Blues Singer: James "Sonny Ford" Thomas (1970). Thomas' albums include Highway 61 Blues.
