▪ 2005Edward Thomas AdamsAmerican photojournalist (b. June 12, 1933, New Kensington, Pa.—d. Sept. 19, 2004, New York, N.Y.), won hundreds of awards during his 45-year career and counted 13 wars among the events he covered but was most renowned for the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph he took in 1968 at the moment a South Vietnamese general shot a Viet Cong prisoner to death on the streets of Saigon. More important to him, however, was the fact that his series of photos of Vietnamese refugees who had sailed to Thailand only to have Thai marines tow their small boat back out to sea helped persuade the administration of Pres. Jimmy Carter to accept nearly 200,000 boat people in the U.S.
